Project Information

As a result of the 2000 U.S. census, the Miami Urbanized Area encompasses parts of the Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for each respective County responded to the potential of consolidating into a single 'regional' MPO by committing to develop and implement a coordinated planning effort resulting in, but not limited to:

  • Regional long range transportation plan covering the tri-county region;
  • Regional project prioritization and selection process;
  • Regional public involvement process;
  • Performance measures to assess the effectiveness of regional coordination.

After several years of ad hoc coordination, the Southeast Florida Transportation Council (SEFTC) was created, under Florida Statutes Chapter 334.175(5)(i)(2), to serve as a formal forum for policy coordination and communication to carry out these regional initiatives agreed upon by the MPOs from Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach Counties. An Interlocal Agreement between the MPOs was completed in 2005 paving the way for the first SEFTC meeting in January 2006. Since its inception, SEFTC has adopted:

  • Regional goals and objectives;
  • Regional corridor of significance criteria;
  • Regional long range transportation plan;
  • Project lists for Transportation Regional Incentive Program (TRIP).

Built upon the success and investment of Miami Dade County’s Community Characteristic Program (CCP), the development of a regional initiative for Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach can be accomplished through SEFTC. The CCP will become SEFTC’s Integrated Transportation Information System (ITIS) for Planners and PIOs to fulfill South Florida’s needs of transportation information management, dissemination, retrieval, analysis, and visualization and ultimately best serve the needs of the South Florida transportation community.
